2025-0117 Soccer Boys V | Waterford vs Denair
Outdoor night games are the reason I wanted to try black and white photos for sports. Most stadiums for small schools were built with the idea of getting just enough light onto the field to see by and little more. Designers weren’t thinking about bulb frequency affecting the line redout on camera sensors, nor were they worried about shifting color balance and high ISO. Their main concern was, “Is it dark out? Can you see the ball? Then we’re good.” Black and white tends to mask a lot of those hurdles, but it can only do so much. While the yellow, black and white filter pushes the contrast, it also cuts into some of the available light, so this might be something I pull out every now and then for something dramatic. Speaking of drama: Big 4-1 win for the Wildcats Friday night. I also saw one of the dirtiest players I’ve seen on the pitch in a very long time and that’s coming from a guy that watched the Copa America this past summer.
